James Monroe Dollar Coins

The obverse, or front side of his coin features a portrait of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States of America. The wording on the coin includes Monroe's name, the phrase "5th President" and also includes the years which Monroe served in the office, 1817 - 1825. Monroe's predecessor was James Madison of Virginia; he was succeeded by John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts.

The reverse or the rear side of the Monroe Presidential Dollars will feature the image of the Statue of Liberty at right, as well as the words, "United States of America," and the denomination of "$1." The coin will be made of the same metal, in terms of composition and weight as the Sacagawea Dollar coin is currently made. The Sacagawea Dollar will continue to be produced during the course of the Presidential Dollar Program.

The coins in this series are the first American coins produced since 1933 to have lettering along the edge of the coin. The new dollar will feature the words "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the date of production along the rim of the coin. Mistakes with edge lettering have lead to some error coins in earlier releases from this series.
